Red Door Bar-B-Q

We had our fill of seafood, but wanted to make sure we got some real good southern barbeque.  I really wanted to find a good "shack" in the backwoods of Mississippi.  So on our way home we Googled our locations and saw a good review for the Red Door Bar-B-Q.  We drove 1/2 hour off our route to have lunch there.

We should have turned around when we saw the shack, because it was REALLY run down and there were no other cars.  But the smoke was rising and the smell was amazing.  It probably was exactly what we had wanted, in theory.

Kevin went in first to make sure it was open and the old black woman assured us it was open.  Camden and I came in and I did my best to imply we might want to go somewhere else, but Kevin didn't pick up the cues...plus the BBQ smell was amazing.

Apparently her son had died 4 years ago and she was trying her best to keep things going.  She only cooked a few items each day, so she had ribs just coming off the fire and pork for sandwiches on the stove, plus potato salad in the fridge.  The water had been turned off to the bathroom out back.  There were pictures covering the walls that looked like this was a hopping place in the 70's, 80's and early 90's.  It had definitely seen better days.

It also looked like she may have had a stroke in recent years and didn't want me to take her picture.  I did get a shot of her while we were sitting at our table and she was plating up our meal.

The food was good.  It wasn't the amazing BBQ experience that we were hoping for, but our bellies were full and we were able to support a lady who was struggling to make ends meet.  Plus we have a great story!
