At the end of the "island" is Fort Morgan. It protect the Bay of Mobile during 4 wars.
We couldn't believe how many oil rigs were off the coast and in the Bay. We don't see any from our spot in Gulf Shores, but every direction you looked from the fort they were there.
This fort was interesting to explore because that was basically what you did. There wasn't alot there besides tunnels and hidden chambers. Things were marked well with what the main rooms were used for, but mainly we just walked around and discovered all the places in the massive building. The first four pictures below are on the outer ring of the fort.
Then we went inside and climbed up on top of the main wall.
I didn't realize how many pictures I made Camden pose for...no wonder she was refusing to take pictures at the end...The lower part of the fort were tunnels that lead to more rooms and more tunnels. There were also rail tracks that connect tunnels through the main grounds. We assumed that was to transport heavy ammo and other machinery.
The arches were covered in stalactite-like material. Kevin thought it was probably salt from the ocean air that has accumulated over the years.
Back outside the fort, the grounds contained other features such as 3 large magazines and buildings such as the hospital, gate house, etc.
There is also a dock at the site of the hospital where a ferry can transport people and vehicles across the bay to Mobile. There was a nice picnic area there where we stopped to enjoy the lunch we had packed.
