Day 5: Phoenix Gold Mine

We wanted to do something a little "historic" or old west on the trip. We decided to check out a gold mine and pan for gold in the Clear Creek.

The tour was very interesting and taught us a lot about mining.

At one point, there was a "lucky bucket" that everyone got to touch. Legend has it that through the years, those who rubbed it had much luck come there way. The guide told a few good stories of how miners and visitors alike had their fortunes changed because of the bucket. Of course, we all took our turn!

Walking through the darkly lit mine shafts and over the tracks gave us a very realistic look at mining conditions.

We also saw the various lines of gems and metals that run through a mine.

Austin was impressed! And pretty convinced that he was going to strike it rich once he got outside to pan. He took it very seriously.

After the tour through the mine, we were given a quick lesson on how to pan and what to look for.

Then we were each given a pan, pointed toward the creek, and told to have fun. The cold mountain water was freezing! But we all enjoyed finding some fool's gold and other beautiful rocks.

Unfortunately, no real treasures were discovered. But lots of good memories!
