Day Six - UrbanPromise Golf Tournament

The timing of our trip enabled Kevin to play in the annual UrbanPromise Golf Tournament. Originally, I just planned on trying to catch people in Camden, NJ that day, but since the tournament was held at an exclusive country club about 10 minutes from Atlantic City, it made for a great vacation activity, while supporting this organization that is near and dear to my heart.

Camden had to help her Daddy practice on the putting greens before the shot-gun start.

Camden and I also got our own cart and were able to cruise around the course, not only cheering on Kevin, but stopping and visiting with my friends and kids from UP.

That's the ocean and a bit of Atlantic City in the background.

It's amazing that several of the program directors are kids that grew up in the program. Jacob was a 10 year old kid in my first afterschool program in 1990 and now is full-time with UP as an afterschool program director. He and Eduardo (a current Eastern College student and summer UP program director who grew up attending UP programs) helped serve lunch to the golfers.

Austin hung out with Kevin's foursome and acted as the SECOND caddy. This course was amazing!

It was also a celebrity tournament, so a few former Philadelphia Eagles and some sports broadcasters participated. Jeremiah Trotter and Mike Quick were there, but Camden got to meet Irving Fryer and Mike Rozier. The Super Bowl appearance and Heismann Trophy really didn't impress her much!

She also hung out with Beasley Reece, a former NFL player and current sports director at the CBS affiliate in Philly.
After the tournament, I gave a brief tour of Camden's nameplace, including a stop at my favorite pizza shop for chicken cheese steaks. The city hasn't changed too much...there is still so much poverty. But at least with programs like UrbanPromise, the wonderful kids and families of the city have better options for their future.
