Fort Pulaski

Just inland of our little island, was this Civil War fort.  This is the view from the highway.  That's a confederate flag flying today (apparantly they hoist different flags on different days).

The grounds of this national park were beautiful.  Those are ruins of two water cisterns that were originally part of the system in use at the Fort.

The fort is surrounded by a moat, so of course, there is a drawbridge.

The interior of the fort had a nice grassy grounds surrounded on all sides by various sleeping quarters, a jail, and storage spaces (including the gun powder room/magazine).

Lots of cannons were on the grounds and in the fort.  Some had remained at the fort and some were found locally and returned to the fort.

The fort was originally a confederate fort, but one day of heavy fighting by the Union army and it soon was taken over.  Several prisioners of war were kept here, especially officers.
