Day 3: Buckhorn Exchange

After the boys got home and cleaned up, we headed for dinner at the Buckhorn Exchange. This is Denver's oldest restaurant and famous for it's taxidermy and exotic food. First, though, we dropped Camden off at one of Lora's friends, who has a 2-year old named Lexi. We didn't think Camden would be able to endure a three-hour dinner...or us endure a three-hour squirm fest.

The lighting was really dark, so I didn't get a good picture of Austin and Kevin overlooking the animals, but you get the idea of what it looked like. Not for those faint of heart...or who don't like zebras, bison, and yaks looking at them.

We asked Greg to join us as a thank you for guiding the guys earlier in the day.

We all got something different so that we could sample the various meats. We started with the calamari appetizer. It was a very small portion, so a little disappointing, but it had a great taste.

Kevin couldn't decide at first, but ended up getting the chef's special that night which was buffalo ribeye with some sort of garlic butter on it. He had had bison before, but this was his favorite cut of meat (and a big portion) and he found it too hard to pass up. It had a dark char on it that he didn't like. Again, a little disappointing.

I got the Colorado lamb chops (on the left). It came with a unique madeira dipping sauce. It had a citrus taste to it, that I didn't find added much to the dish. However, it was very tasty and tender. Another special that evening was an ostrich steak add-on. I order it so that we could all try it (on the right).

Lora got elk and cornish game hen. The elk was my favorite of the evening, followed by the ostrich. Kevin was still disappointed by his bison ribeye to have too strong of an opinion of any of it.

Greg had buffalo prime rib and salmon. Austin also had salmon. Both were delicious. And the chipotle hollandaise dipping sauce for the salmon was also good on the other meats as well.

If I lived in Denver I don't think I'd go to0 many more times to the Buckhorn Exchange. It was very pricey and for the money it was not worth it. However, for the experience and the atmosphere we definitely recommend everyone who travels (or lives) there to do it at least once.
