Bug Bowl

We decided to check out Bug Bowl at Spring Fest this year.  After church, we headed to Lafayette and hit the tents on Purdue campus.  I didn't think Camden would have anything to do with the bugs, but knew the Ag School had other animals too.  Kevin, however, decided he would be brave and have a cricket brownie.  Big mistake.  He was picking legs out of his teeth for the next 20 minutes!

Camden was thrilled to receive a balloon that she hung onto the rest of the afternoon.

Our first (live) animal encounter were rabbits.  They were the softest things!  Camden particularly liked the calico one.

At the next tent, Camden did the ball toss trying to win a goldfish.  All three missed (except when she walked up to the bowls and dropped them in).  The student helping let her have more than her $1 share of turns and Camden kept trying to walk up to the bowls and drop them in.  She didn't really care about the goldfish...and I don't think she even realized why she was throwing ping pong balls...she was just having a good time.

Next we headed to the bigger farm animals and watched the baby pigs (and protective mama), as well as the cow and baby calf.

Camden also wanted to try milking the cow.  She was brave enough to sit next to it, and reached her hand under several times, but just couldn't quite muster enough courage to actually try milking.  She was content to pet it...and proudly told everyone, "I didn't milk the cow."

She willingly put her face in the hole for a chicken photo-op, but never would look up.  Cute none-the-less!

The table next door had baby chicks, turkeys, and geese that you could hold and pet.  It was a popular spot and hard to get close, but I finally got a baby turkey.  Holding Camden and holding the turkey was quite the balancing act - especially when one started flapping it's wings and the other started freaking out!  Kevin just kept laughing and taking pictures.

Our final stop was at the spin-the-wheel game.  Camden landed on animal and successfully told the Purdue student what sound a cow makes to win a piece of candy.

In another year or two, this event will be a whole lot easier for Camden to enjoy (or more accurately for us to enjoy with Camden).  She did a great job, but was still just a little young to truly take part in all the activities.
