Field Trip

Thursday was Camden's first field trip that parents were allowed to come on.  I have been told that the 4th graders go on many, many field trips throughout the year....I can't wait!

On this trip we headed to the four, small museums we have in Crawfordsville.  I have only toured one of them, so I was happy to see the insides of these treasures.

I was glad to wait a few minutes in her classroom before we left.  I only know about 1/2 of these kids, so I was happy to put some names/faces together.

The kids do morning seat work first thing.  Each has a binder with a reading assignment and a math assignment each day.  They also have books they can read to start the morning.

Camden was chosen to help carry one of the lunch totes to the bus.  Boy is that a big deal!  Hands shoot up to volunteer.  They pick a friend to help them.  She picked Caleb...and thankfully because the tote was heavy and they had a long way to walk.

Our first stop was the Lane House.  The grounds of this mansion are used for the Strawberry Festival so we have been here many times, but never inside.  It's exactly like you would expect, but it was nice to learn more about this family and their role in Montgomery/US history.

Henry Lane was a senator and friend of Abraham Lincoln.  In fact, he was one of Lincoln's pallbearers.

The docents made the hour tour endurable for 4th graders, but they loved being take outdoors afterward and run the grounds for a few minutes before moving on to the next location.

Rock Art

One of the many, many things that Gramma Pat and Camden did this weekend was go to a garage sale.  Camden found a rock painting kit and Gramma Pat agreed to pay the few dollars to get it.  This is such a big trend right now and Camden has always loved to paint, so it was perfect.

The kit came with 4 flat, black rocks, paint, brushes, and a book of ideas.  Camden got right to work.  Actually she has done each evening since she got home.

"Hey, bees wings are a 'B'"

Couldn't forget the stinger.

I love her 'love' emoji too!

Pumpkin Patch

Our last activity at Beasley's was a hayride to the pumpkin patch.  We always prefer to pick our pumpkins and not buy from a store.  We each pick one and we try to get a good variety.

I have never picked from a more beautiful patch.  Maybe because we usually pick later in the month, but there was nothing but perfect, round, bright pumpkins everywhere we looked.

Camden picked the big one this year.  It had one big scrap down the back side, but overall was a winner.  Kevin picked the small one and I found the missing tall and skinny one.

i also bought a cute new scarecrow for our front porch.  He is a snowman on the back!  I really liked him, but it was funny that Kevin whispered to me as we walked away, "It's not as cute as what Mom (GaGa) makes."  And I laughed because I was thinking the same thing  But it will do...and we still have our faithful scarecrow to place at another spot in the yard.

Beasley's Orchard

After the racing we headed to my favorite orchard.  We each bought a wristband so we could participate in all the activities around the venue.  We only had about 2 hours before they closed, but it turned out to be the perfect amount of time.

We started in the "Barnyard Bonanza" play area.  Camden enjoyed the giant bounce pillow and Kevin and I played a few rounds of tether ball.  Kevin smoked me!  We then all played football/baseball/basketball.  I made up for the previous losses by dominating these games.

Because our time was short, we headed toward the other adventures that were part of the wristband deal.  Camden climbed the hay mountain while we waited for our turn at the apple cannon.

The apple cannon was impressive.  It had lots of power and was fun to use.

After we each shot our apples, we headed to the corn maze.  In all our adventures, we had never done a "real" corn maze.  This year's maze had a minions theme.

Kevin quickly taught Camden and I what makes a corn maze fun.  He got enough ahead of us to hid and jump out and scare us.  Camden got him back though.  It was a lot of walking (and I think we only did part of the first minion!), but we had lots of laughter.

NexgeneRACERS

I recently got introduced to a non-profit in Indy that I may do some consulting work for.  They use racing as a way to teach life skills to youth.  Saturday was their season-ending celebration.  We went to learn more about what they do.  It was pretty cool!

There title sponsors are Lucas Oil and the Indy 500, so it made sense that this final event was held at the Lucas Estate.
